The Big Snow

by Berta and Elmer Hader

Summary

As winter approaches, the animals of the woods prepare in their own ways, some flying south, some storing food, and some settling in to sleep through the cold. When a heavy snow blankets the land and buries their usual sources of food, a kind couple living nearby scatters seeds and crumbs to help the creatures survive. Berta and Elmer Hader filled the book with detailed nature scenes, alternating soft pencil drawings with full color plates of the snowy countryside.

Historical Context & Significance

The husband and wife Haders drew on the wildlife around their own home in the Hudson River valley for the book's woodland scenes.
