Never Won a Major Prize

Circe

by Madeline Miller

Summary

Circe, the strange, unloved daughter of the sun god Helios, discovers a talent for witchcraft that frightens the gods into exiling her to the island of Aiaia, where she crosses paths with Odysseus, the Minotaur, Medea, and the wrath of Olympus itself across centuries of solitude. Miller retells the Odyssey's most famous enchantress as a woman slowly claiming power and selfhood in a world run by capricious male gods. The novel became a massive bestseller and helped cement the boom in feminist retellings of Greek myth.

Historical Context & Significance

The novel was shortlisted for the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction but lost to Tayari Jones's An American Marriage. Its wins came from readers' honors like the Indies Choice Award rather than any major juried prize.
