Summary

Two rival human civilizations converge on a strange star and the spider like alien race awakening beneath it, setting off a long game of survival, betrayal, and first contact. Vinge sets the story in the same universe as A Fire Upon the Deep but in a region where faster than light travel is impossible, sharpening the tension. The novel explores tyranny, the people called Focused, and the patient resistance of those enslaved by it.

A prequel to A Fire Upon the Deep, the book won the 2000 Hugo Award for Best Novel and earned Vinge his second Hugo for a Zones of Thought novel.
