Summary

Vonda N. McIntyre tells the story of Snake, a healer who travels a post apocalyptic Earth using genetically altered serpents to treat the sick. When one of her precious snakes is killed out of fear, she journeys across a harsh landscape to find a way to replace it. The novel explores compassion, autonomy, and bodily knowledge, and it expanded the author's earlier award winning novella.

Historical Context & Significance

Dreamsnake grew out of McIntyre's novelette Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand, and it won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards together.
