Caldecott Medal Winner

Madeline's Rescue

by Ludwig Bemelmans

Summary

Madeline tumbles into the Seine and is saved by a brave dog the girls name Genevieve, who then lives at the boarding school until the stern trustees try to send her away. Bemelmans paints Paris in his loose, lively style, with yellow hats marching in two straight lines past famous landmarks. Told in bouncing rhyme, the sequel returns to the smallest and boldest of the twelve little girls.

Historical Context & Significance

This was the second Madeline book and the one that earned Ludwig Bemelmans the Caldecott Medal, following his original Madeline of 1939.
