Pulitzer Prize Poetry Winner

Neon Vernacular

by Yusef Komunyakaa

Summary

Bringing together new work with selections from earlier books, this volume moves between Louisiana boyhood, Vietnam combat memory, and the syncopated time of jazz. Komunyakaa writes in densely sensory lines whose music borrows from blues phrasing and improvisational structure. The collection enlarged the Pulitzer canon to include a Black Southern voice shaped by war and by African American musical tradition.

Historical Context & Significance

Komunyakaa was the first male African American poet to win; his style brought a new sensory intensity to the prize.
