Louis R. Harlan completes his two volume study of Booker T. Washington, the most powerful Black leader in America at the turn of the twentieth century. This volume covers his years building the Tuskegee Institute and operating a vast political network that critics called the Tuskegee Machine. Harlan shows both Washington's public accommodation and the hidden maneuvering he used to influence appointments, newspapers, and rivals.

Historical Context & Significance

Harlan also edited the multivolume Booker T. Washington Papers, and this concluding volume earned both the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize.
