Nebula Award Best Novel Winner

Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea

by Ursula K. Le Guin

Summary

Returning to Earthsea after nearly two decades, Le Guin centers this novel on Tenar, now a widowed farmer, who takes in a badly abused and burned girl named Therru. The aging former wizard Ged, stripped of his magic, also comes into her care, and together they face questions of power, gender, and who holds value in their world. The book reexamines the male centered magic of the earlier Earthsea novels through a quieter, more domestic and feminist lens.

Historical Context & Significance

Le Guin subtitled the book as the last of Earthsea, though she later returned to the world with further stories, and it won the Nebula Award for Best Novel.
