Summary

A team of four women, identified only by their roles, ventures into Area X, a quarantined coastal wilderness where the laws of nature and the mind begin to break down. Narrated by the expedition's biologist, the novel builds a creeping atmosphere of dread as the landscape seems to rewrite the people who enter it. It opened VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy and became a landmark of the weird fiction revival.
