A Hero of Our Time
by Mikhail Lermontov
Summary
Told through a series of interlocking narratives, the novel follows Pechorin, a bored and manipulative army officer stationed in the Caucasus who drifts through duels, seductions, and betrayals without real remorse. Lermontov builds the portrait piece by piece, letting other characters describe Pechorin before finally handing over his own journal. The novel's cold, self aware antihero became a defining figure in Russian literature and a forerunner of the psychological novel.
