The Time Traveler's Wife
by Audrey Niffenegger
Summary
Henry DeTamble suffers from a genetic disorder that yanks him involuntarily through time, and the novel traces his lifelong love affair with the artist Clare Abshire, who first meets him as a child while he arrives from a future in which they are already married. Niffenegger alternates between the two narrators to build a love story whose chronology loops, overlaps, and forecloses on itself with devastating effect. The novel became an international bestseller and a modern classic of romantic speculative fiction.
Historical Context & Significance
The novel was shortlisted for the 2005 Arthur C. Clarke Award but lost to China Miéville's Iron Council. Its wins came instead from readers' and retail prizes such as the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize rather than any major juried literary award.
